The ROCK has COME BACK from the DEAD

It's been a while -- quite a while if I may say so -- since I last poured out my heart on this piece of web space that I call (and many others call) a BLOG. I really miss how this theraputic tool for publicising personal insights into my person has changed my life for the better (and sometimes for worse). I get into trouble when I don't blog, and when I do blog, well I still get into some kind of trouble. But nonewithstanding, this blog has been a part of my life and I can't just turn my back away from it. Not now when I find more things to write about.

The past month or so has kept me busy doing mostly nothing, and things I should have been doing a long time ago. Some people call it backlog, but I would really like to think of it as a breakdown in my time management capabilities. Things that out to have been done before are still needing to be done now. Some projects that need to be finished are going along really slowly that it's not very pleasant anymore. And even more things need to be done by some time in the future. Nontheless, I fight and strive and try to do them.

I usually keep a TODO list somewhere, and what better place to put them than here -- so that when other people who actually read the blog read something they want to help me with, they could just shout out to me by emailing me or making it obvious somehow. Anyway, these things that need to be done are somehow trivial to some, but very time consuming for me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

THE SIMPLETRON

I am currently reengineering the simpletron implementation I did a couple of years back -- I'm using more advanced C++ constructs like templates and constructor overriding. No pointer arithmetic for me, and I'd rather learn how to implement iterators for the data structures that my friends and I have implemented over the last semester (namely the Binary Search Tree (BST) and the Adelson-Velskii and Landis (AVL) tree) for inclusion in the simpletron project as well as maybe perhaps the C++ standard template libraries.

So to anyone who knows how to implement iterators for your own C++ objects, links, hints, tips and tricks are most welcome.

THE KDSS

Well, due to near lack of respect for the project leader and utter disregard of other people's contributions, I have still yet to implement VERY MINOR CHANGES to the trapping efficiency computation code. Just capping the values between 0 and 1 is something that needs to be done, but evidently I'm just too lazy and stubborn to give way to someone who doesn't know what he's talking about one bit.

THE INC's

I need to do 1 interview of someone who knows something about parallel computing research (eng10/spcm1), submit 1 (or more) diskettes of the result on my study on parallel genetic algorithms (cmsc 170 -- AI), submit 2 projects that do freaky mathematical things using Java (cmsc 172 -- robotics). I also need to take 1 PE class for the next semester (the last) which should be PE 3 Advanced Swimming.

THE WORK

If dear uncle wins the Mayoral race in our homestown stuck in the 80's I better suit up for work to improve the municipal hall's network. As for now, I'm just waiting for the elections to pass by and have my uncle win it again.

THE SOCIAL LIFE

What more do I have to say, it needs to be worked on anyway.

Chill...

Help wanted: writing resources

I'm currently fleshing out a fantasy setting for a series of short stories rattling in my head that I'd like to get out into the world. However, it's the first time I'm even trying to do this, so I need your help: are there any good resources for world-building and writing guides that have been helpful in your projects? So far I've been really enamoured by Brandon Sanderson's world building and Patrick Rothfuss' storytelling. I suspect those two are at the pinnacle of the trade and I'm probably not going to do myself any favours by trying to live up to what they're doing, but I'd still like to give it the good college try. Are there any resources (forums, books, guides, blogs, or courses) that I should be taking if I want to do a decent first take at this? This is probably better as an email to friends and maybe some random folks (or maybe even a tweet) but why not a blog as well?

Reconnecting with people

2021 started with a a good sense of connection for me, having spent time with friends and family in a simple celebration of the oncoming year. The transition from 2020 to 2021 and being able to look back at a good part of my recent history got me thinking about how life has been for me and the family for the past decade. There’ve been a lot of people that I’ve met and become friends with while there are those that I’ve left behind and lost touch with. There’s a saying about treating old friends different from new ones, which I do appreciate now that I’m a bit older. It also means that my relationships with people that I get to spend a good amount of time with take a different shape. This reflection has given me some time and space to think about what it means to reconnect with people. Friends are the family we choose ourselves. — Edna Buchman I have the privilege of having life-long friends that I don’t always stay in regular contact with. From my perspective, if I consider you a frien...

Grief and Mourning

I've not been writing for a long time already but this time I can't keep this to myself. There's been too much happening to me and my family the past few days that I need an outlet. I've tried talking it out, being silent, and crying it out. Right now though I'm numb. I don't know whether I can keep this to myself and if I do I don't think it will be a good thing. Maybe other people have had the same experience or at least gone through the same thing. Maybe just the act of writing this out is going to be enough to make me feel something. There was a time in my life that I had thought I've been through everything. I thought everything that can happen to me would be something I can deal with. There was no doubt in my mind that I can handle anything. Unfortunately this latest one that happened to me and my wife wasn't something I was prepared for. Nor was I ready to deal with it in a manner that was controlled or well-thought out. I thought maybe if I...
